How it is calculated

Yellow (caution) from a 0.60 m wave at the beach or 50 km/h gusts. Red (dangerous) from 1.20 m or 60 km/h. The light is never green after dark: it is always caution or worse, because lifeguards are off duty.

Waves are taken 3 km offshore in the direction the beach faces (a model of about 9 km resolution), not surf at the shore. Nearby headlands and islands are only estimated from the shape of the coastline, and local rip currents are not seen.

A green light does not rule out other hazards such as rip currents, jellyfish or tides. Follow the signs and flags at the beach.

Frequently asked questions

How is the Phu Quoc beach light calculated?

Yellow (caution) from a 0.60 m wave at the beach or 50 km/h gusts; red (dangerous) from 1.20 m or 60 km/h. At night the light is never green, because lifeguards are off duty. This is a reference index, not an official forecast.

Where are the waves taken from and for how many beaches?

For 13 beaches on three coasts (west, east, north tip). Waves are taken 3 km offshore in the direction the beach faces, from a wave model of about 9 km resolution, not surf at the shore.

Does a green light on the page mean there is no danger?

No. The light only reflects waves and wind calculated for the beach. Rip currents, jellyfish and tides can still be dangerous even when waves are small. Follow signs at the beach and official warnings at nchmf.gov.vn.
